Choosing the right neighborhood in Dakar
6 min readUpdated on October 26, 2026
In Dakar, the neighborhood matters as much as the home: it shapes your commute, your budget and your daily life. Here are the questions to ask yourself, then an overview of the main neighborhoods. Rents vary a lot from one street to the next: rely on current listings to get a precise idea of prices.
The right questions to ask
- Where do you work or study? At rush hour, a few kilometers can mean a long commute, especially towards the Plateau.
- What is your total budget, including charges, transport and deposit?
- Do you prefer residential calm or a lively area (shops, restaurants, neighborhood life)?
- Do you need schools, a market or healthcare nearby?
- Visit at different times of day: traffic and noise are not the same in the morning and in the evening.
The main neighborhoods at a glance
- Dakar-Plateau
- The administrative and business center, with ministries, banks and the port. Very busy during the day, quieter in the evening. Convenient if you work there.
- Almadies
- At the western tip of the peninsula, an upscale residential area close to the ocean, restaurants and many diplomatic missions.
- Ngor
- Between a traditional village, the beach and Ngor island, a sought-after seaside setting next to Almadies.
- Ouakam
- Close to the Mamelles and the African Renaissance Monument, a neighborhood mixing residential areas and more traditional housing.
- Mermoz-Sacré-Cœur
- Residential areas popular with families, well connected by the VDN, with schools and shops.
- Point E
- Central and rather quiet, close to Cheikh Anta Diop University and Fann hospital.
- Yoff
- A seaside neighborhood with a traditional character, near the former airport and its developing surroundings.
- Liberté
- Central, lively residential areas, often more affordable than the western corniche.
- Parcelles Assainies
- A very large, dynamic working-class neighborhood where rents are generally more affordable.
